Preparing for a fast is key. One part of preparing is choosing what to fast. Begin by praying and seeking God about what kind of fast to do. Remember, what you fast is between you and God. What you choose should not be determined by what someone else is doing.
Also, pray about how long you will fast. Many churches are participating in a 21 day fast. If you are just beginning don't feel like you have to do the full 21 days. Some people may do 3-4 days a week or some may choose 1 or 2 weeks during the fast. While there are some that may fast longer. Use wisdom and remember to pray to God for guidance.
There are different types of fasts to choose from. Some people choose one type and others may choose a combination of fasts. For example, You might do the Daniel Fast for 4 days and a Full Fast for 3 days.
Types of Fasts
Full Fast - Drink only liquids, especially water. You may also do clear broth and 100% fruit or vegetable juices. Be sure to consult your doctor.
Partial Fasts
- The Daniel Fast - This comes from Daniel chapter 10. The Daniel Fast is a fast from meats, sweets, bread, or dairy. See the Daniel Fast Guidelines for more details.
- You could give up one type of food like sweets or caffeine or maybe even one meal a day.
- You could choose to fast from sun-up to sundown.
You can also fast a specific activity or habit. This is a good option for those with a health problem, pregnant, and even kids. Some examples are: TV, social media, talk radio, video games, texting, smoking, or alcohol.
Most importantly...Focus on God not the food. Do allow yourself to become legalistic about what to eat and not eat. If you slip, don't give up and keep going! Remember, pray and seek God about the specifics of what to fast and how long.
