Prayer Focus

Prayer is another important part of preparing for a fast. You need to decide what your main prayer focus will be during the fast. Write down about 3 or 4 things that you are believing God for this year. There are some things that require prayer and fasting in order to see a breakthrough. Jesus said, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29). Also, Jesus is our example and He himself fasted (Matthew 4:2). Jesus also took time to be alone and pray to His Father on multiple occasions.

Take time each day to pray and seek God. Prayer is something that is simple yet powerful. Prayer does not have to be a certain amount time or in a certain way. God wants you to talk Him about what's going on in your. It doesn't matter if it's big or small, there is nothing God cannot handle.

Fasting without Prayer and God's Word is nothing more than a diet.

Choosing what to Fast

Preparing for a fast is key. One part of preparing is choosing what to fast. Begin by praying and seeking God about what kind of fast to do. Remember, what you fast is between you and God. What you choose should not be determined by what someone else is doing.

Also, pray about how long you will fast. Many churches are participating in a 21 day fast. If you are just beginning don't feel like you have to do the full 21 days. Some people may do 3-4 days a week or some may choose 1 or 2 weeks during the fast. While there are some that may fast longer. Use wisdom and remember to pray to God for guidance.

There are different types of fasts to choose from. Some people choose one type and others may choose a combination of fasts. For example, You might do the Daniel Fast for 4 days and a Full Fast for 3 days.

Types of Fasts

Full Fast - Drink only liquids, especially water. You may also do clear broth and 100% fruit or vegetable juices. Be sure to consult your doctor.

Partial Fasts
  • The Daniel Fast - This comes from Daniel chapter 10. The Daniel Fast is a fast from meats, sweets, bread, or dairy. See the Daniel Fast Guidelines for more details.
  • You could give up one type of food like sweets or caffeine or maybe even one meal a day.
  • You could choose to fast from sun-up to sundown.
You can also fast a specific activity or habit. This is a good option for those with a health problem, pregnant, and even kids. Some examples are: TV, social media, talk radio, video games, texting, smoking, or alcohol.

Most importantly...Focus on God not the food. Do allow yourself to become legalistic about what to eat and not eat. If you slip, don't give up and keep going! Remember, pray and seek God about the specifics of what to fast and how long.

What is the Daniel Fast?

Here is a great video that will explain what the Daniel Fast is.

I have also added a quick reference page with the Daniel Fast food guidelines. Keep in mind that these are guidelines and just that. Everyone is on a different level of fasting. The Daniel Fast is just one of the different types of fasts. Some people do a full fast which is only juice and water. I do not recommend doing the full fast if this is your first time.

New Blog

Hello to all who are reading this. I have decided to create a blog for this years time of Prayer & Fasting. I want to share with you tips and recipes that I have acquired over the past few years. The first time I fasted it did not go so well. I didn't know much about it and was not prepared. I believe that having an understanding about Prayer & Fasting and being prepared are 2 keys for success. I now look forward to this time of year.

Prayer and Fasting allows you to draw closer to God and disconnect from the world. When you Pray & Fast, you are able to cut down the noise and distractions of the world and hear the voice of God more clearly. It's a time to clean out all the junk inside (spiritually & physically). Prayer and Fasting is a great way to start out the year.
